Statement
Multiple voices and points of views have been a cornerstone in my work, a reflection of both the world at large, my family history of migration, and my own background in technology, science and art. It is a balancing act of the analytical vs meditative modes of creating, of re-imagining traditional motifs in a contemporary context, and of combining abstract & representational forms.
In a world of bigger-is-better and faster-is-better, I create small, intimate work, slowly. Whether it’s an artist’s book or a painting, I want to draw the viewers in to read it at arm’s length, to collaborate with me through interactivity or perhaps a difference in understanding. Drawing influences from all across Asia, the Abstract Expressionists and illuminated manuscripts, my work is layered with lush imagery and jewel-like colors. Working with memories, symbols and language, I document the world around mepast & present, Asian & American, the observer & the observedin an ever changing relationship of narration vs. interpretation.
